A Class 1 driver is qualified to drive a truck over 3,500kg (C) with a trailer over 750kg (+E).
A Category C+E vehicle has a trailer that detaches and is frequently referred to as an artic (articulated lorry), Class 1 or an HGV.
By gaining your HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence, you’ll be able to drive the largest vehicles in the logistics industry, weighing up to 44 tonnes and generally used for national and long-haul deliveries. The vehicle may also be in a drawbar configuration.
A C+E licenced driver can earn up to £50k per annum. With the high demand for qualified Class 1 HGV drivers, the potential to earn and grow within the industry is stronger than ever.
Anyone who holds a Cat. C (Class 2) licence can upgrade to a Cat. C+E (Class 1) licence.
If you hold a Cat. B (car) or Cat C1 (7.5 tonne) licence, new rules mean you don’t have to take your Cat. C test first – you can train directly for your Cat. C+E licence.
Once you have your licence, you will need to undergo a medical examination every 5 years and undertake 35 hours’ periodic Driver CPC training in order to keep your DQC up to date. This is standard for any HGV driver. Find out more about Driver CPC.
