Start your career as a professional driver

The Initial Driver CPC (iCPC) is a legal requirement for anyone looking to become a professional lorry or bus driver.

It applies if you:

• Are new to professional driving
• Passed your car licence after 1 January 1997 and are upgrading to LGV/HGV or PCV

Initial CPC ensures you have the knowledge and practical skills needed to drive safely, professionally, and within industry regulations.

What is Initial CPC?

To drive commercially , you must complete four modules (Modules 1-4) as part of your licence and qualification.

Modules 1 & 3 – Theory and practical driving tests
Modules 2 & 4 – The Initial CPC qualification

You must pass all four modules to receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC_ – this is essential for paid driving work.

Private vs Commercial Driving

If you only plan to drive privately (e.g. a horsebox), you can take:

• Module 1
• Module 3

However, if you later want to drive professionally, you will need to complete:

• Module 2
• Module 4

This additional qualification is what’s known as the Initial CPC.

Who needs Initial CPC?

You will need Initial CPC if:

• You want to work as a paid LGV/HGV or PCV driver
• You do not already hold Driver CPC
• You are completing your first vocational licence

If you already hold Driver CPC,  you may only need Periodic CPC, not Initial CPC.

What happens after you book your Initial CPC Training through Driver Hire?

Once you’ve booked and paid for Initial CPC, this is what happens next:

Step 1: We book your Module 2 test
Module 2 is the first stage of initial CPC.

After payment:

• Our team will contact you to confirm your details
• We will book your Module 2 Case Studies exam at a DVSA test centre
• You’ll receive confirmation of your test date, time, and location

You do not need to book the exam yourself – we handle this for you.

Step 2: You prepare for the Module 2 exam
Once your test is booked:

• We will explain what the test involves
• You’ll be guided on how to prepare
• The exam focuses on real-life driving situations, safety, and compliance

Module 2 is not a hazard perception test – it’s based on multiple-choice case studies.

Step 3: You site and pass Module 2

• You attend your Module 2 test at the DVSA centre
• Results are typically available straight away

Once you pass Module 2, you can move on to Module 4 

Step 4: Progressing to Module 4 
After your Module 2 pass

• We will help you book Module 4 practical training and test
• Module 4 is usually completed alongside or after your driving tests
• Once Module 4 is passed, you are issued your Driver Qualification Card (DQC)
