Who needs Initial CPC Training

The Initial Driver CPC (Modules 2 and 4) is a legal requirement for anyone looking to become a professional lorry (LGV/HGV) or bus/coach (PCV) driver. It is required for:

  • New drivers entering the transport industry
  • Drivers who hold an LGV/HGV or PCV licence but have never previously held a Driver CPC qualification or Driver Qualification Card (DCQ)

The Initial CPC is designed to ensure drivers have the knowledge, skills, and practical understanding needed to operate safely, professionally, and in line with current industry regulations. It consists of:

  • Module 2 – Driver CPC Case Studies Test (theory-based)
  • Module 4 – Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test (practical assessment)

Successful completion of both modules, alongside the relevant licence tests, allows drivers to obtain their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and work professionally as an LGV/HGV or PCV driver.

Once you’ve booked and paid for Initial CPC, this is what happens next:

Step 1: We book your Module 2 test
Module 2 is the first stage of Initial CPC.

After payment:

  • Our team will contact you to confirm your details
  • We will book your Module 2 case studies exam at a DVSA test centre
  • You’ll receive confirmation of your test date, time, and location 

Step 2: You prepare for the Module 2 exam
Once your test is booked:

  • We will explain what the test involves
  • We will set you up with your study portal

Step 3: Progressing to Module 4
After your Module 2 pass:

  • We will book you onto your Module 4 practical training and test
  • Once Module 4 is passed, you are issued your Driver Qualification Card (DCQ)

What to expect from Initial CPC?

To drive commercially, you must complete four modules (Modules 2 & 4) as part of your licence and qualification.

Module 2 – Case Studies Test

This is a theory-based exam taken at a DVSA test centre. It is designed to test whether a driver can apply their knowledge to real-life situations they may encounter as a professional HGV or PCV driver.

What it covers:

  • Drivers and vehicle safety
  • Road safety and compliance
  • Driver hours and tachograph rules
  • Dealing with incidents and emergencies
  • Customer service and professional conduct
  • Loading and vehicle security

Test format: 

  • 7 case studies based on real-life driving scenarios
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Pass mark: 40 out of 50 

Module 4 – Practical Demonstration Test

This is a practical “show and tell” assessment where the candidates demonstrates that they can operate safely and professionally. It is not a driving test. It will be taken after passing Module 2.

What it covers:

  1. Vehicle safety checks
  2. Safe loading and load security
  3. Reducing physical risks to yourself and others
  4. Assessing emergency situations
  5. Preventing illegal trafficking and criminal activity

Test format:

  • Approximately 30 minutes
  • Practical demonstration and verbal questioning
  • Pass mark: 80 out of 100, with at least 15 out of 20 in each topic area
