New Tachograph Rules for Some Light Goods Vehicles

From 1 July 2026, some operators carrying goods undertaking international journeys, including transport between the UK and EU must now comply with drivers’ hours and tachograph regulations. The changes primarily affect vehicles undertaking international goods transport between the UK and EU. Own-account operations may also be affected unless the applicable exemption applies, including where driving is not the driver’s main activity.

What does this mean?

Affected operators must:
• Follow assimilated drivers’ hours rules
• Fit in-scope vehicles with a Smart Tachograph Version 2
• Record driving time, breaks, rest periods and other work activities using the tachograph

Are you affected?

The rules do not apply to operators carrying their own goods where driving is not the driver’s main activity, or to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes operating solely within the UK.
Operators undertaking UK-EU journeys should review their vehicles and compliance arrangements as soon as possible. With demand for tachograph installations remaining high, early action is recommended.
